101: Searching Court Records
Most background information comes from
civil, criminal, and bankruptcy records. Bankruptcy files will show you
if your subject has filed a bankruptcy, and whether or not you can make
a claim against his real estate, or estimate whether or not your case
is worthwhile. You can also find his social security number, DOB,
spouse, other persons involved, and list of assets and liabilities at
the time of bankruptcy petition.
Some cases also contain copies of
Federal Tax returns, divorce settlements, and information from
other civil cases. You may want to search criminal and civil records,
to find additional identifying information, such as spouses name, other
addresses, aliases, repossessions, etc.
This is a great way to generate leads
to skip trace
on cases you thought were dead.

Keys for Repossessors
If you are working as
a skip
tracing for a repossession company, you will probably be asked
to skip trace key codes for the vehicle your employer
is trying to repossess. Try locating and calling the
selling dealership, many times they will have the key
codes on their service computer system. Having the keys
makes it much easier to repossess a difficult car.
Car
dealerships file vehicle sales by date. It will help
you out immensely if you know the date of the
vehicle sale.

Skip Tracing
a Cars Color
Here is a skip tracing
tip to find the factory color of a car you are
trying to repossess: Call a new car dealership and
tell them you are thinking about buying a used car.
Explain that you suspect that the car may have been
painted. Ask them if they can tell you the factory
color of the car if you give them the VIN Number.
Works every time with every car manufacturer there
is. I learned this skip tracing tip at the first
repossession service I worked at. It has helped me
repo thousands of cars.
